Transcript Toolkit for YouTube (“the extension”) is a browser extension that reads the
captions of the YouTube video you are watching and, on your explicit click, prepares a
summary or fact-check prompt and submits it in your own AI chat (ChatGPT, Claude or
Gemini).
What the extension does with data
YouTube pages and captions. The extension requests the watch page and
caption tracks of the video you are watching directly from YouTube, using your existing
browser session. This content is processed locally in your browser.
Generated prompts. When you click the AI button or a claim marker, the
extension builds a prompt (video title, URL and transcript excerpts) and stores it briefly
in Chrome’s session-only extension storage. The prompt is inserted into the AI provider page
you selected and is removed from storage as soon as it is consumed. Closing the browser also
clears it.
Fact-check claim detection runs entirely locally with a lightweight
heuristic. No network or AI request is made to detect claims.
Settings. Your preferences (selected provider, output language, prompt
presets, fact-check toggle state) are stored in Chrome’s extension storage on your device.
What the extension does not do
No data is sent to the developer. The extension has no backend server.
No analytics, telemetry, tracking or advertising identifiers.
No sale or transfer of user data to any third party.
No reading of your AI chat conversations; the provider pages are used only to insert and
submit the prompt you explicitly triggered.
No collection of personal, health, financial, authentication or location information.
Third-party services
Content is exchanged only with services you already use, at your request:
YouTube — caption and page requests for the video you are watching;
your chosen AI provider — ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic) or Gemini
(Google) — which receives the prompt you triggered under that provider’s own terms and
privacy policy.
The extension is not affiliated with or endorsed by YouTube/Google, OpenAI or Anthropic.
Permissions
storage — saving your settings and the short-lived pending prompt;
access to youtube.com — reading captions and rendering the extension’s
controls over the player;
access to chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, claude.ai,
gemini.google.com — inserting and submitting the prompt after your click.
